Introducing: The Happy Traveler Mobile Bar

Bartender. Builder. Event manager. Mixologist. Mother. Christine Hanley wears a lot of different hats. We sat down with the owner of The Happy Traveler Mobile Bar to find out just how she does it.

Running a mobile bar business is like mixing a delicate cocktail.

Two parts marketing, one part customer service, a dash of event management, a squeeze of creative branding and design, a shot or two of sales, a garnish of legal, plus a topping of weekly admin.

And don’t forget the ice...

With decades of experience in events and brand management, plus years spent behind the bar at festivals, concerts and nightclubs, Christine Hanley felt it was time to start creating her own mobile concoction.

As with every entrepreneur we speak to, she's taken a unique approach to running her business.

Owner and chief bartender of The Happy Trailer Mobile Bar, here’s Christine’s story, in her own words.

Paired with vintage furniture and custom decor, the converted utility trailer bar is the perfect backdrop for stylish weddings

Hey Christine, thanks so much for joining us and providing insight into what it takes to run your business, The Happy Traveler Mobile Bar.

Could you tell us a little bit more about your background?

"I have 15 years of experience in event and brand management, paired with 12 wonderful years behind the bar.

In my early 20’s I landed a full-time job representing nationally recognized beer and liquor clients.

This role had me managing visibility, promotions, events, and talent.

Creating cocktails and drink menus was part of my role so when I made the jump to full time bartending, it was an easy transition.

In addition to private events, I have extensive experience bartending in all kinds of settings from nightclubs and restaurants to high volume concerts and festivals."

"I have clients that have turned into friends. There’s nothing more rewarding than that."

Who or what inspired you to take the plunge and start your own mobile bar business?

"Many factors led to me starting my own business.

My work background has gifted me with the proper knowledge and training needed to have a successful mobile bar business.

Other private event bartending companies also inspired me, but not necessarily in the way one would imagine.

I knew that I could deliver a quality of product that I would expect and appreciate as a customer that I wasn’t already seeing reflected in my market.

In January of 2020, I became a mom and from that point on, it was apparent that I needed to switch to a career that I can work remotely during the week while also being “Mom”.

Some time passed before I pulled the trigger because of the Covid lockdowns, but I finally started the mobile bar process in August of 2021 and have never looked back!"

What was the process like buying and developing your mobile bar trailer?

"I found my trailer on Facebook marketplace and I can confidently say that it has never transported a horse!

Our build is actually a custom utility trailer, and it was used by the seller’s grandfather to sell antiques.

We are smaller than a horse trailer which allows us to get into more spaces and backyards.

It was completely unfinished with silver paint and wood that was installed in the 80’s.

The model rims were from 1986, the year I was born.

We put all of the work in ourselves and are constantly thinking of ways to upgrade!"

Small but mighty, the utility trailer has plenty of space for service whilst remaining easy to maneuver

What have you enjoyed most about running the business? Any favorite milestones or steps of the journey so far?

"I have clients that have turned into friends.

There’s nothing more rewarding than that."

"I am constantly looking for ways to better my product. The wheels are always turning!"

What has been your biggest challenge in launching and running your mobile bar business?

"While I don’t personally have a biggest challenge, there is a very clear challenge that I see rising in the industry.

I am seeing multiple mobile bars pop up that are run by individuals that do not have the proper experience, training, or knowledge of laws necessary to safely service an event.

When you’re paying for a luxury service, it should be a given that the company you’re hiring is an expert in all aspects of what they do."

Delicious caffeine kicks also available!

What are your upcoming plans for the business and what are you most looking forward to this year?

"I am constantly looking for ways to better my product.

The wheels are always turning!

I’m looking forward to meeting so many clients in person that I have built relationships with.

I'm looking forward to servicing so many wonderful events.

And most importantly, I’m looking forward to mixing some tasty cocktails!"

A beautiful tiled backsplash plus mood lighting make the mobile bar super inviting for guests

I hear that! Finally, what's your 2023/24 availability looking like?

"We are still booking for 2023 & 2024.

2023 has limited availability, but the last-minute events are sometimes the best ones!

Reach out and let’s see if we have your date available!"

Christine, thank you for your time and insight today! Wishing you all the best for the future and looking forward to seeing what you achieve next.

Cheers!
